Chapter Twenty-Two

Sara and I had agreed to meet at The Courtyard Kitchen a little place on Montana that had great food and reasonable prices.

I called Daniel to let him know I was going to see Sara for dinner, and ask if he could obtain photos for me of everyone who was in the operating room that night.

“Anything new?” I asked.

“Only negatives. No fingerprints, no hair, no fibers, no secretions. I suspect the killer wore surgical gloves, and an operating room hat and shoe covers. We haven’t found the syringe. The only thing we know for sure, is that one vial of the drug is missing from the anesthesia cart.”

“Keep me posted,” I said.

Sara was already at the table when I arrived, sipping a glass of red wine. She smiled and waved at me. I thought she looked better than at any time I’d seen her, since the breakup. It’s remarkable how a good hairdresser can take ten years off your face.

“You look wonderful,” I said, as I seated myself.

“I’m a free woman,” she said. “I’ll never have to deal with that bastard again. I’ve got my life back, and it feels great.”

I didn’t know how to respond to that. Somehow, it seemed inappropriate to be celebrating a murder, so I occupied myself with reading the menu instead.

“You haven’t told me how you got involved in Wesley’s murder,” she said.

I collected my thoughts for a moment, while the waiter hovered over us, and I ordered the salmon. Sara asked for the roast lamb.

“Why should you care who killed Wesley?” she asked. There was a look on her face that seemed almost hostile.

“I guess I care, because the first thought that occurred to me when I heard about the murder, was that you would be on the list of suspects. I thought the quickest way to remove you from it was to find out who really did it.”

“What made you so sure I didn’t?” she asked.

I smiled at her. “I’ve known you for over twenty years. I know your character. You’re not capable of murder.”

Sara buttered a chunk of French bread. “You still haven’t told me how you wound up in the middle of this.”

“Detective Ross is a good friend. I don’t know if you heard about Ben’s sister Beth. It was in the Santa Monica papers about a year ago. She was murdered. Daniel handled the case.”

Sara reached over the table and touched my hand. “I didn’t know, Hannah. I’m so sorry. It must have been a nightmare for you. I remember meeting Beth. She was lovely.”

I didn’t want to talk about Beth again. I’d been obsessed with her death and was just beginning to put it behind me.

“Anyway,” I continued. “Daniel and I started seeing each other. We were on vacation two weeks ago, and we ran into Wesley. When the murder happened, Daniel told me about it.”

“I see.”

The food arrived and we turned our attention to it. Sara sliced her lamb into small, even pieces, chewing slowly and swallowing each mouthful with a sip of wine.
